Our range of Alsace AOC wines

ALSACE AOC wines

A few facts ...

The Alsace wines are made with only one type of vine (except the Edelzwicker which is made with different types of vine) whose plantation and culture are regulated by the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine).
We grow the seven vines allowed in Alsace : Sylvaner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, and Pinot Noir.

Key : ALC = Total alcohol content expressed in a percentage of the volume • Sugar g/l = reducing sugar content expressed in grammes per litre.

Edelzwicker

It is the only “compound” wine allowed to be made in Alsace and it comes in the form of 1-litre bottles. It is made with Chasselas and Sylvaner grapes so as to make it a light, fruity and dry wine to be enjoyed every day at your table.

Alsace AOC l Grands Crus and Special Mentions l Syrupy Wines and Brandies

The Grands Crus and the Special Mentions

The Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Muscat wines may be followed by the name of the soil (the "terroir") on which the vines were grown : they are called the Grands Crus.

There are 50 such "terroirs" in Alsace and they are delimited by the INAO. They had already been known in the previous centuries for the quality of their wines. They are protected by strict regulations, particularly concerning the supervision of the vines. Their production is also subjected to extremely strict conditions concerning their minimum alcohol content and their yield, which must be between 55 and 66 hectolitres per hectare. Before being marketed, they have been certified by the INAO after being analysed and tasted.

Riesling
Cuvée Elisabeth Stumpf 2010 Gold Medal COLMAR

SilverMedal at the Wine Fair of Colmar.
The vines are grown on a personal selection of plots of land, in tribute to Elisabeth Stumpf, the wife of Léon Baur.
This fruity and dry Riesling has aromas of citrus fruit and lemon, both to the nose and to the palate, and is well-balanced. This selection is the result of a strict choice of the best “terroirs” where the typicality of the vine is enhanced.

Riesling
Grand Cru Eichberg 2009

That excellent plot of land located on the Grand Cru Eichberg of Eguisheim (Eichberg means “Oak tree hillside”), with a very chalky subsoil, is particularly adapted to the Riesling vines. The aromas of mineral elements and of lemon and grapefruit predominate when tasting this low-yield wine, which is very dry and which lingers long on the palate. This wine will become more complex as time goes by, which gives to it a great potential for improvement, so it can (and should) be kept for some years in your cellar.

Gewurztraminer
Grand Cru Pfersigberg 2009

This very aromatic and generous Gewurztraminer comes from the Grand Cru Pfersigberg of Eguisheim (Pfersigberg means "Peach hillside") which has a clay-limestone “terroir”. It is the archetype of a very great Gewurztraminer and a gem in our production. An extremely favourable "terroir" and a low yield make this wine an exceptional vintage and a favourite with lovers of great Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer Kaefferkopf 2009

From the "lieu-dit" Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr, the oldest “lieu-dit” in Alsace, which is finally becoming classified Grand Cru in 2007. This vineyard has a granitic subsoil which gives to this particularly powerful and spicy Gewurztraminer all its delicacy. It has a very good potential for improvement;

The Syrupy Wines and the Brandies

The syrupy wines

Gewurztraminer
Vendanges Tardives 2009

The grape harvest made when the grapes are overripe and dried out, with the help of the autumn sun and the microscopic fungus Botrytis Cinerea gives birth to great vintages called the "Vendanges Tardives". It is the case for 2005, which was a wonderfully intense vintage with a glorious late summer. It is most certainly one of the best Vendanges Tardives produced by the House Léon Baur. This well-balanced wine, which is all sweetness and fruit, has a very strong golden colour, as well as freshness and a nice first impression. Aromas of exotic fruit, particularly of lychee, are predominant... To be tasted absolutely! For aperitifs and Foies Gras.

The brandies

Our production is supplemented by a wide range of 45° fruit brandies – among which the Marc de Gewurztraminer (marc brandy), the Kirsch d’Alsace, the Mirabelle (cherry plum brandy), the Alisier (serviceberry brandy), the Poire Williams (Williams Pear brandy) – as well as a crème de cassis (a blackcurrant liqueur) and a crème de pêche (a peach liqueur).
The Marc de Gewurztraminer is characterized by musky aromas with notes of roses. It tastes particularly of spices and liquorice.

The brandies :
The Williams Pear combines a fruity palate with a flowery nose. It also lingers long on the palate.
The Mirabelle is full of character; it is rich and harmonious to the palate.
The Kirsch is the oldest of all brandies. It should preferably be savoured after a good meal. It can also be used to advantage in cooking…
The Raspberry brandy is extremely rare. It should be consumed chilled so as to savour its subtlety and its smoothness.
